About

“We have an opportunity to do things that few communities in this country get to do.” “This is, as they say, 'big news’… (it) means Provo will be one of the first cities in the world to have universal Internal connectivity in nearly every home.”
“When every one of the kids in public school has Internet, what are the possibilities? What does it mean for a city to be able to communicate with every resident electronically? What does it mean for economic development?”                                                                                               - Mayor John Curtis

We live in a world of increasing speed and constant change. A world where borders seemingly become less relevant and communities grow or dissipate depending on how they adapt and even embrace this momentum of change. Those who succeed develop and implement a unified purpose and strategic direction with their communities in order to not be blown about by every wind of fortune. As citizens of Provo, we aim to be such a community.

In March 2010, Provo City brought together its community leaders to develop the Provo City Vision 2030. In April 2013, Provo mayor John Curtis announced that Google would be bringing their network infrastructure, Google Fiber, to Provo. The technology offered by Google and now by other organizations and their availability to the community gives us the opportunity to accelerate our progress towards the 2030 Vision and take it to the next level.

Every time people have gained access to better and faster ways of communicating, breakthroughs have happened. Whether it was the advent of the press, phones, or the internet, each new approach to connect people has ushered in exciting possibilities. We believe such change is coming to Provo.

To ensure our success, we are engaging in a Strategic Planning and Implementation Process called Provo Accelerated. We have engaged a selected group of committed and creative individuals representing various sectors in the community. They will contribute ideas about specific tech-related services or products that will benefit the community. After brainstorming the ideas, the group will create a strategic plan. From there, the group will than lead the effort to bring the strategic plan to life.

The group will be organized into five breakout teams:
  1. Education
  2. Entrepreneurship
  3. Family / Community
  4. Social Sector / Digital Inclusion
  5. Healthcare
Each set of two team sponsors will lead a core team of 4 – 6 individuals with a broader pool of 10 – 15 individuals for feedback and implementation.  The planning effort will culminate in a community forum on October 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Provo Recreation/Community Center where the entire community will be invited to hear presentations, engage in discussions and help develop an action plan for helping Provo accelerate into the future with the power of the fast speed and near ubiquity in access to the Internet.

We are a community of great people and resources. We are continually recognized by many national groups as a leader in the nation. This strategic leadership group will build off of Provo’s powerful strengths in order to maximize the impact that these new technologies are bringing our way. Their inherent influence, resources, and connections combined with the engagement of our people and the support of the city will accelerate Provo’s growth and prosperity. As a community we will accelerate the realization of our 2030 Vision. The only question is, what role will you play?
